Monetisation

Free to post. Funded by people who believe in it.

A platform that sells legal outcomes gets sued. A platform that sells community, ad-free reading and honest research does not. Here is exactly how My Haki Voice pays for itself — and the lines it will never cross.

Revenue model

Four streams, all of them boring on purpose

01Legal risk: Low

Community memberships

A small optional monthly fee for ad-free reading, thread following and digests. It buys convenience and belonging — never advice, never priority for a case, never a promise about an outcome.

02Legal risk: Very low

Supporter donations

One-off M-Pesa or card contributions from readers and the diaspora, with a public running total of what moderation and hosting actually cost each month.

03Legal risk: Low

Ethical sponsorship

Clearly labelled placements from legal-aid NGOs, universities, insurers and civic organisations. Sponsors never see user data, never influence moderation and are never presented as endorsed legal help.

04Legal risk: Low

Anonymised insight reports

Aggregate, non-identifying reports on what Kenyans are complaining about by county and category, sold to researchers, media and policy bodies. Built from public posts only, with no personal data.

Six things we will never sell

  • Charging for case review, assessment or 'how strong is my case'
  • Paid lawyer referrals or commission on introductions
  • Selling user data, contact details or profiles to anyone
  • Pay-to-remove-a-post, or paying to bury someone else's story
  • Subscriptions that imply legal representation of any kind
  • AI that predicts outcomes or drafts documents for a fee

Every item on that list is where a Kenyan consumer-protection or Advocates Act claim would come from. Turning any of them on would multiply revenue and multiply liability at the same time.

A realistic path

Phase 1 — Community (months 0–6)

Zero revenue by design. Grow the forum, prove moderation works, publish the takedown log, and incorporate the company. Costs are hosting and part-time moderation.

Phase 2 — Supporters (months 6–12)

Turn on donations and the Voice membership. A forum with 20,000 monthly readers converting at 1% at KES 200 covers moderation for a small team.

Phase 3 — Institutions (year 2)

Add clearly labelled sponsorship from legal-aid and civic organisations, plus quarterly anonymised trend reports for researchers and media. This is where the model becomes self-sustaining without ever touching a user's case.

Need help with something?

Billing, account, moderation or legal questions. Never send case documents or ID numbers. Signed-in members get a two-way thread and notifications.
